Wis. Police Officer Shot, Another Injured During Well-Being Check

Dec. 15, 2022
"If that officer was not wearing his ballistic vest, the round would have most likely struck him in his upper chest," said a Waukesha police captain after two officers were hospitalized following a shooting.

One Wisconsin police officer was shot and another was injured Wednesday as they searched a home for a resident exhibiting "erratic behavior."

The incident happened just after 3:30 p.m. as Waukesha police were responding to a call concerning a landlord who requested a well-being check for a tenant, WITI-TV reports. According to police, the tenant was experiencing "erratic, irrational thoughts," and the landlord was concerned.

As the officers were searching the home, a woman who had been in the basement opened fire. One officer and the woman were struck in the exchange.

The wounded officer was taken to the hospital, along with another officer who was injured but not shot. They were in good condition, but no details were released concerning the nature of their injuries.

Police said that a ballistic vest likely saved the life of the officer who was shot.

"If that officer was not wearing his ballistic vest, the round would have most likely struck him in his upper chest," said Capt. Dan Baumann.

The woman was found dead in the basement. An autopsy is scheduled to determine how she died.

Both officers in the incident are law enforcement veterans, with 21 years and 12 years of experience between them.
